 The Roy Lister Memorial Trophy

By our Roving Reporter Malcolm Swain.

Beaten but what spirit

On Tuesday night 6th May, at Stag Meadow in the Roy Lister Memorial Trophy final, Old Windsor came of age with a 3-0 win over league leaders Microblast.

The first half belonged to the champions with Old Windsor a little tense early on, but as the game wore on and a couple of good saves by Mark Beale, Old Windsor our club eased themselves in to the match,

Unfortunately after about 25 minutes Ryan Pursell had a hamstring injury and was replaced by Ben Harris and five minutes after that, the other holding player Matthew Bell came limping off with a groin strain, Dayne Thorpe was the replacement.

With ten minutes to half time it was imperative that the club hold on, the magnificent back five of Day, Schweizer, Kelly, D'Amico and keeper Beale, made damn sure of that.!

Half time came still 0-0 and now we saw Manager Neil Benton earn his corn, his game plan for the second half was magical.

Adam Turner, Ben Harris  and Warren Reece in midfield and dropping Michael Williams off the front line into little hole behind Dayne Thorpe and Andrew Love  was inspirational !.

Now for the action, 15 minutes into the second half, a corner on the right, hit long and played immediately back across the box and Andrew Love scored with a fantastic goal.

This settled the Old Windsor players and supporters alike.

Another set piece , ...another goal this time from skipper James Schwiezer ...unbelievable 2-0

At this moment in time I'm sorry to say your local reporter got carried away with the euphoria of it all and the rest of the game was a bit of a blur (couldn't have been the Snake Bites Malcolm by any chance??,,,Webmaster) but I do remember Dayne Thorpe getting a third , quite deservedly so, he, like all the other players ran themselves into the ground  3-0 FANTASTIC !!

To sum up this game is difficult because Old Windsor were on the back foot a lot of the time, but I will say this ; Old Windsor have certainly set theur stamp back on on Sunday morning football again.

Well played young men ! You were once again a credit to Old Windsor Club and particularly yourselves.

Martin Woods

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the sudden passing away of one of our well known club members. Martin (Whoopsy) was a great mate and always ready to help anybody, I am sure that all members will wish us to pass our deepest sympathies and condolences to Marion and family. We will all miss him very much.

THE CONKER CLUB  (2007 Outing)   click on thumbnails for enlarged picture
This year the Conker Club had their usual coach trip to raise a few glasses to celebrate the conker harvest (as you do). After a faulty start (No Coach arrived which is a fairly basic mistake if you think about it), they surmounted every difficulty by finding another willing to take them.  Finally leaving a couple of hours late ( during which time they were FORCED to spend drinking a few extra  in the club) the sixteen of them, made their (by now ),very merry way towards Brighton. After at least 10 comfort stops they arrived at their favourite lay-by and commenced to unload refreshments and to conduct the very serious business of the Annual Knock-out conker competition

Let Battle Commence

As last years champion Dave successfully defended his title of the "Conkerer".. He was very modest about his win saying that really the credit should be given to his painted conker shaped stone that he won with last year, and not only that,  who was prepared to argue with Big Dave?

Finally after a tiring journey they found a haven where they could have another drink

The Smokers Lament

In days of Yore

(which were before

the likes of Brown and Blair)

The working man could go through life

without a single care.

He liked his smoke, a tasty pint,

and a good chat at the club.

'till this labour government  gave the working class a snub

"You're having it too good" they said

and banned the smokes indoors.

With loads of "spin" and false research

this lousy lot of creeps

turned human rights upside down

and shoved smokers out for keeps,

The powers that be in T.O.W.C

Jumped smartly to attention

and at the AGM, to please the "crowd",

our chairman he did mention.

"You'll be ok to have your smoke, protected from the weather"

But failed to give a date

so for the persecuted smoker,

all he can do is wait

The message from the committee then

in words so very plain,

"Yes, of course you have your smoke..........

T.O.W.C. Smoking Suit

out in the p***ing rain"

Saturday 21st July A start is being made on the Pergola for smokers a.k.a. "LEPERS LOUNGE"

15th September The (nearly) finished job, the brick mounted table should be re-orientated because it obliges the smokers to sit just where the rain drives in under certain wind conditions.

It is understood that Nigel is going to cultivate a grape vine round the trellis ...(red wine please Nij)

A suggestion has been made to remove the table and add stocks under the cover so that passers by can throw rotten fruit at the smokers.

THE FINAL WORD ON NUTRITION
After an exhaustive review of the research literature, here's the final word on nutrition and health:

1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

5. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you

I found this recipe whilst viewing a web site of a namesake of mine who was a rabbit fence engineer in Australia in 1919 and I offer it for anyone who is having a party

DID YOU KNOW? #1

The club is situated on royal land  and we pay rent to the Crown Commissioners.

Every year we receive tickets to the Garter Procession at Windsor Castle usually held in June

During the late sixties Sir George Bellew was a Vice President of the club and was on the building committee, he submitted a drawing of the outside structure of the club as we know it today.

In 1952 Sir George was Garter King of Arms and read the declaration from the balcony of  St.James Palace with full ancient pageantry ,  the accession of the Queen was publicly proclaimed round the realm.

Sir George lived in Old Windsor at the Lodge on Crimp Hill, now part of Sir Elton John's estate, he was a frequent visitor to the club and was instrumental in inviting HRH theDuke of Edinburgh to the  club in 1970 ( see club history),

He attended the club's annual dinner dances that the committee arranged and always had a pocket full of sixpenny pieces for the club's one armed bandits. A true clubman at heart.

DID YOU KNOW? #2

That the club once ran a Benefit Society for members use ? see below a picture of the card kindly loaned to us by Lucky Jack

Please note, we have now added a visitor's book  and a Rogues Gallery to the site
